Neural networks are driving “nearly 100%” of growth on Pinterest, according to SVP Jeremy King. The social media company uses AI to find images and advertisements that it thinks would attract specific users.
- The company's machine-learning system drew an estimated 480 million users in Q1 2021, a 30% increase YoY.
- Pinterest ad sales have also more than doubled since 2018, compared to 80% and 56% increases for YouTube and Facebook, which is being largely driven by AI, King said.
- About a third of companies that use AI have or plan to adopt neural networks within the next 18 months, according to Forrester and International Data Corp.
- While data on users is fueling the neural networks, critics point out that the more layered networks face problems with "black box AI," when a system’s owner can’t explain how the AI came to its decisions.
