Amazon warehouse workers planned more than two dozen protests across the country in response to Amazon's Prime Day. The protests are against working conditions, air pollution generated by the warehouses, and enhanced health risks due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
More:
- The virtual and in-person protests are aimed at highlighting "inadequate and inconsistently enforced safety measures" the company has put in place during the pandemic. Protests are being held in states including California, New Jersey, and Minnesota.
- The protestors will also demonstrate against new rules they say punish workers who demand better working conditions. Earlier this month, 35 workers in Minnesota walked off the job when an employee named Farhiyo Warsame was terminated after bringing up safety concerns to management. Warsame says management says she was spending too much "time off task."
- Amazon employees in Germany are also engaging in a two-day strike, demanding better pay and working conditions. Amazon workers have been engaging in strikes in Germany since 2013 and the country is Amazon's second-largest market after the United States.
- Amazon revealed earlier this month that nearly 20,000 employees in the U.S. had tested positive for COVID-19.
