I didn’t think I could do one of these, but our managing editor, Kim, emailed all the Inside writers and said we should write you an editor’s note every day! So hi. I’m Jon Mitchell. I’ve been your correspondent for the past four weeks, and I’m having a blast. I cover Apple both as a tech journalist and a lifelong user, so I write for Apple users like you and me. 1. At WWDC Monday, Apple’s keynote will outline a generational shift in its devices and software. It will highlight independence of the Watch from the iPhone, enhancements to the iPad to make it a better PC replacement, a new unified strategy for apps that work across all Apple’s platforms, and new first-party apps, health, and augmented reality features. It will also reveal the clearest possible sign of the end of this era of Apple by killing iTunes. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to manage your media and devices through the new Music app. — BLOOMBERG

2. Apple has hired Chiara Cipriani away from working on the upcoming Disney+ streaming service, as it prepares its own Apple TV+ service to launch this year. She’s now a director of video services at Apple based in London, according to an update of her LinkedIn bio earlier this month. Maybe this is just a free flow of talent between friendly companies, but it’s probably a sign of growing tension as Apple enters the original video world and the two family-friendly brands prepare to battle for monthly streaming subscriptions. It remains to be seen what this means for Disney CEO Bob Iger’s Apple board seat. — BLOOMBERG

3. #FollowFriday: @neilcybart

Neil Cybart is an independent Apple analyst with a site called Above Avalon. He sends daily updates for paying subscribers, but he also publishes less frequent, very thorough essays that offer incisive analysis about Apple’s business and technology in a way that’s accessible to those of us without degrees in this stuff. He provides well-founded estimates of unreported numbers like the size of Apple’s user base and its overall mix of devices.

He wrote a classic this week called “Apple’s Billion Users” that extrapolates from a few things we know for sure to calculate that Apple has about a billion users, 100 million of whom don’t have an iPhone. It raises interesting questions about Apple’s growth and where it goes from here, taking into account the global trend of slowing smartphone growth and proposing several ways in which Apple can adapt to that reality — and still sell more people phones. This high-level picture of the people in the Apple ecosystem is an interesting thing to contemplate going into WWDC. The stuff announced next week will show how Apple is responding to these circumstances and trends.

4. Apple sold 12.8 million wearable devices in Q1 of 2019, up 49.5% year over year. The overall market reached 49.6M units, up 55.2%, with more dramatic 135.1% growth in ear-worn devices specifically. Apple’s 25.8% market share dominates the market, but its share eroded by about one percentage point since last year, and third-place rival Huawei, with 10% share, is growing at a blistering 282.2% year over year. — IDC

5. China’s Ministry of Commerce plans to retaliate against the U.S. trade sanctions on doing business with Huawei. According to Caixin Global, “China plans to place foreign companies considered to have damaged the interests of Chinese companies on an ‘unreliable entity’ list”. We don’t yet know if that list will include Apple, but ministry spokesperson Gao Feng promised more details soon. An outright ban of Apple products in China is estimated to threaten 29% of Apple’s annual earnings. — PATENTLY APPLE

6. Developers of third-party screen time tracking apps that were kicked off the App Store have formalized their campaign to get back on. They’ve launched a PR website and proposed an API Apple could build to allow third parties to track screen time properly, rather than abusing enterprise Mobile Device Management (MDM), as these companies had been doing before. The campaign was egged on by former Apple exec Tony Fadell. This story’s assertion, also made by Fadell, that the campaign “may put pressure on Apple to respond” at WWDC on Monday strains credulity. Apple’s not going to change — or even promise to change — its API plans in the last three days of its yearly OS development cycle. — THE VERGE

8. Apple has applied for a patent for a new wireless security system for its stores that would disable unpaid devices as soon as they leave the store (i.e. are stolen).PATENTLY APPLE

9. Apple released an update for the AirPort Base Station update with security fixes, including some for bugs that could be exploited by remote attackers.APPLEINSIDER

10. The agency that does Apple’s ads for iPhone and Services has appointed new leaders for the Apple portfolio. — ADWEEK
