Maine wants to impose EV and hybrid fees to all vehicle owners in the state. The annual fee would be charged to owners of battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and gasoline-hybrid vehicles in order to pay for highway maintenance. The measure would tack on an additional $250 annual fee for electric cars and a $150 annual fee for hybrid vehicles. A spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Transportation said the fees would help pay for road maintenance because these drivers typically pay less in gas taxes. The AP reports Maine's highway maintenance is underfunded by $60 million a year. The state’s GOP governor, Paul LePage, has famously backed off from supporting electric vehicles. — AP
