Three of the major cloud vendors are notifying customers that they’re taking every possible measure to patch their networks against two major security flaws. Spectre and Meltdown, revealed Wednesday, are the result of issues in processor design that could allow malicious code to wreak havoc with a a computer’s kernel memory. Statements were issued by Amazon, Microsoft, and Google about their efforts. The vulnerabilities rippled across the industry, with more fallout expected. - VENTUREBEAT

Sometimes the competition is the best inspiration for what to name your product. That’s what The Information is reporting about Amazon’s RedShift, the company’s data warehouse service. The product’s name was apparently a dig at Oracle’s red branding given that Oracle CEO Larry Ellison has repeatedly bashed AWS and mocked its reliance on Oracle technology, recently spending $50 million on software. Amazon and Salesforce are actively seeking to disentangle themselves from Oracle, although completely transitioning databases away from on-premise management is one of the last frontiers of completely moving to the cloud. - GEEKWIRE

Salesforce is plotting some aggressive growth goals in the years ahead. CTO and co-founder Peter Harris telling a group of analysts how the company wants to hit a target of $60 billion in revenue by 2034. The slide deck, which has since disappeared from Twitter, indicates the company wants to be at $10 billion in revenue by the end of this year and double that number by 2022. It’s an extremely aggressive take, but one that fits in with a company that just built the tallest office building west of the Mississippi. - TECHCRUNCH

Google has announced the launch of preemptible GPUs, which are used for high-intensity computing tasks. The target group is scientists, engineers, or creatives who need massive computational power. The feature comes at a 50 percent discount, enabling developers to take advantage of the NVIDIA K80 and NVIDIA P100 GPUs on the Cloud Platform at 22 cents and 37 cents per hour, respectively. If Google needs the resources for its own work, however, it can temporarily suspend the processes with short notice. - VENTUREBEAT

Amazon Web Services is certainly popular, accounting for upwards of 35 percent of the public cloud market. However, new research indicates one-fourth of IT departments don’t know how much they’re spending. The survey of over 200 businesses by Densify found that many IT departments aren’t digging into the dashboard tools to better control what resources they’re using. As more resources go offsite, it will remain a challenge to control costs. - COMPUTER WEEKLY
