Researchers have identified a new ransomware strain that went undetected in the built-in anti-malware used by some cloud vendors. Researchers at BitGlass said both Google Drive and Microsoft Office 365’s SharePoint web service failed to identify a new strain of Gojdue ransomware called ShurL0ckr when tested last month. When the malware was tested in the same timeframe against VirusTotal’s database of known vulnerabilities on January 16, only seven percent of AV engines detected the malware. A Microsoft spokesperson said it was “investigating claims of a new variant and will provide the necessary protections based on (its) findings.” Google did not comment. –THREATPOST

Google is reportedly building a cloud-powered video game console and subscription streaming service. Codenamed Yeti, the system would allow players to stream games rather than download them, similar to Sony’s Playstation Now platform. Essentially, it appears that hardware will be an Android TV-style device (like the Nvidia Shield). Google can take advantage of Android titles in a ready-made gaming universe but will also look to strike exclusive deals with game developers. Given how it’s already possible to use Chromecast to stream Android games to a TV, it’s also possible Google has grander visions with higher-end gaming experiences. –THE INFORMATION
