Inside Cloud (Feb 12th, 2018)

The Pentagon’s award of a $950 million cloud computing contract to an Amazon partner has raised concerns about future Defense Department cloud contracts. The contract was awarded last week to Rean Cloud, a company that specializes in services associated with Amazon Web Services. There is fear that contract signals AWS has an inside track to secure future contracts that could be worth billions. The Pentagon has said it plans to hold an open competition for the work but has declined to say whether it will select more than one company, leading industry officials and members of Congress to openly fret that Amazon might walk away with a winner-take-all prize. AWS already holds a $600 million contract to provide cloud services for the CIA. –THE WASHINGTON POST

Mendix, Reltio and Zoho were named the top cloud computing companies to work for based on statistics from Glassdoor. Google, SAP, Netskope, OutSystems and LogicMoniter rounded out the top of the list. The rankings looked at two simple statistics: What percentage of employees would recommend the company to a friend looking for a job and what percentage approve of the CEO. Companies that did not have many, or any, entries on Glassdoor were not included in the list. -FORBES

Google Cloud announced Monday that it will make Cloud Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) available in beta on its platform. TPUs are designed for machine learning and tailored for Google’s open-source machine learning framework, TensorFlow. These chips can provide 180 teraflops of processing to support training machine learning algorthims. "We designed Cloud TPUs to deliver differentiated performance per dollar for targeted TensorFlow workloads and to enable ML engineers and researchers to iterate more quickly," Google wrote in a Cloud Platform blog. "Over time, we'll open-source additional model implementations. Adventurous ML experts may be able to optimize other TensorFlow models for Cloud TPUs on their own using the documentation and tools we provide." -ZDNET
