Oracle will house its first startup cloud accelerator in the United States in Austin. The accelerator will operate out of Oracle’s new 560,000-square-foot campus southeast of downtown Austin. Oracle will pick five to six startups focused on cloud technology to take part in the six-month program, which it will run twice a year. Oracle expanded the Startup Cloud Accelerator last year and currently runs eight programs in locations including Bristol, England; Bangalore, India; Paris; Sao Paulo; Singapore and Tel Aviv. -512TECH

Citrix Systems has acquired cloud-computing startup Cedexis. The startup’s technology monitors the performance of the internet so companies can route their online traffic most efficiently and most reliably. That provides benefits to organizations working with large loads that need optimal computing power at all times. Clients include Comcast, Lenovo and Microsoft, among others. Cedexis has raised $33 million to date, including an investment from Citrix’s investment arm. –OREGON LIVE

81 percent of enterprises now have a multi-cloud strategy according to a new report from RightScale. While Amazon Web Services is still the dominant cloud provider the company’s gigantic lead continues to shrink. Amazon Web Services has been adopted by 64 percent of firms in 2018 while Microsoft Azure has been adopted by 45 percent of firms. On average, companies are using about five public and private clouds, the report found after surveying 997 technical professionals. And cloud spending is also increasing for many firms: 66 percent of cloud users will grow spend by 20 percent or more in 2018. –TECH REPUBLIC

Google has hired Samsung’s former CTO Injong Rhee to lead its Internet of Things business as part of the company’s cloud offering. He will report to Diane Greene, chief executive of Google’s cloud computing group, and said in a LinkedIn post he wants to harmonize Alphabet’s various projects related to IoT. Rhee was behind Samsung’s acquisition of cloud firm Joyent, saying at the time the firm's rollout of new software services made its "reliance and need for cloud ever-growing." He left Samsung in December after more than six years there. He was involved in the launch of the company’s Knox security system, Bixby digital assistant and Samsung Pay mobile wallet. -ZDNET

Veritas Technologies will expand its multi-cloud data management capabilities with a new version of its CloudPoint technology. CloudPoint is Veritas' next-generation data protection technology for cloud-native web applications, and is targeted at born-in-the-cloud workloads, and not at on-premises applications. CloudPoint 2.0 improves the integration of software with to add new cataloging capability to find and restore data down to a single file. CloudPoint 2.0 will work with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform. -CRN
