1. Nairo Quintana won stage two of the Vuelta a Espana on Sunday. Quintana, a Colombian rider, took the victory at the Vuelta a Espana in 2016 and hopes to do so again this year. Riders in stage two Sunday went from Benidorm to Calpe; Quintana was in a group of six nearing the finish and attacked during the last 3km of the race. He beat out the others with a finishing time of five hours, 11 minutes and 17 seconds. Quintana’s win was his 10th stage victory in cycling grand tours (Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta). Nicolas Roche and Primoz Roglic came second and third. — BBC SPORT

2. Alessandro Petacchi was placed under a two-year ban for doping. Over the weekend, the UCI announced that Petacchi — a retired cyclist who won six Tour de France stages and 22 Giro d’Italia stages — has been suspended for two years. According to Austrian police, Petacchi violated anti-doping rules in 2012 and 2013. Petacchi will be stripped of three stage victories in the 2012 Tour of Bavaria and cannot participate in any UCI event for two years. — YAHOO SPORTS

3. Hundreds of New York City cyclists rallied on Sunday to remember Jose Alzorriz and lobby for safer bike lanes. They Along with honoring Jose Alzorriz, the cyclist who was killed by the speeding 18-year-old Umar Baig earlier this month. They want protected bike lanes where cars can’t park or drive — a safe place to travel. The cyclists walked to the intersection where Alzorriz died and left a white bicycle there in his memory. “[This] would make him really happy because he was a huge advocate for cyclists and pedestrians for safety,” said a friend who helped organize the rally. — CBS NEW YORK

4. Mountain biker Emil Johansson drastically changed his diet. Johansson became the FMB World Tour champion as a teenager, but was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus, Hashimoto’s disease and several food intolerances not much later. Thanks to some diet changes, he took first place at the 2019 Red Bull Joyride. Johansson now eats mostly paleo since he can’t have dairy or eggs. A typical training day includes oatmeal, lots of root vegetables and locally-sourced fish. He focuses on eating a lot of calories o give him fuel for training. Vegan ice cream is a favorite, too.  — BICYCLING

5. A cycling class was held inside the Montana State University football stadium. Local studio Zephyr Cycling Studio offered a pop-up class with stationary bikes on the 50-yard line. The studio plans to do more of the events in the future. — BICYCLING

One suggested utilizing the training schedules on the British Cycling website. Another recommended finding a local coach. 7. A Lafayette, Louisiana, bike kitchen is getting a makeover. Nonprofit Bike Lafayette was about to disband when Andre Angelle reached out to them, asking to volunteer. One thing led to another and Angelle became the new president of the organization. Now Angelle has hundreds of donated bikes that he plans to invite community members in need to fix and then use. 8. Cyclists will ride over the 4,226-foot Big Dam Bridge on Sept. 28. The annual event Big Dam Bridge 100 is held in Little Rock and utilizes the Big Dam Bridge, a bridge over the Arkansas River that’s the longest bridge built for pedestrian and bicycle traffic in North America.
