President Trump on Monday signed proclamations reducing the size of two national monuments in Utah. In the largest reduction of federally protected lands in U.S. history, Trump announced that the Bears Ears National Monument will shrink to 220,000 acres from about 1.5 million acres. The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument will be reduced to about 1 million acres, half of its current size. During a speech in Utah, Trump said that previous administrations abused the federal Antiquities Act, which requires presidents to restrict the designation of monuments to "the smallest area compatible with proper care and management of the objects to be protected." "These abuses of the Antiquities Act give enormous power to faraway bureaucrats at the expense of people who work here, live here, and make this place their home," Trump said. - USAT
