The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the U.S. rose above 7 million Friday as Florida lifted COVID-19 restrictions across the state. According to Johns Hopkins University data, there were 44,000 new COVID-19 cases yesterday, up from about 37,000 on Wednesday.
- Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced today the state will move into the next phase of reopening and lift state-wide restrictions on restaurants across the state as well as remove fines for not wearing a mask in public. Local governments can still put restrictions in place if they choose.
- 23 U.S. states reported an increase of weekly new cases compared to the previous week. The rate of new cases nationally is up 9% from last week.
- The U.S. has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world. Three other nations have recorded over 1 million total cases. India has had 5.8 million, Brazil has had 4.6 million, and Russia has had 1.1 million. In terms of total cases per million residents, the U.S. ranks 12th, below Brazil, Israel, and Peru.
- Today, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said he and his wife both tested positive for COVID-19.
