6. The phrase "buy experiences, not things" is a cliche, but that's exactly how some self-made millionaires have kept their millions. Some famous names value frugality not because they're cheap, but because studies show investing in experiences such as hobbies and travel enrich one's life in a far deeper, lasting way than a flashy new car can. Another great thing about experiences? You don't always have to buy them. Here are ideas for a couple of free ones:

  • Pick up a new hobby for free through Udemy, edX, and even YouTube tutorials.
  • Read books for free by heading out to the local library or checking out Internet Archive, a digital archive containing millions of free books, music, and even movies.
  • Go to the museum. Some are free, particularly for those in New York holding library cards.
  • Head out on a walking tour, like this free one in San Francisco.

7. If you're researching high-quality affordable headphones, you'll likely see Yamaha ones pop up more than once. These headphones are incredibly durable while delivering the kind of quality even music professionals admire but at a far cheaper price. One sub-reddit Buy It For Life user says he has had his Yamaha headphones for 8 years. They still sound incredible, even after many 10+ hour stints in various studies and libraries," he adds.

  • Product: Yamaha headphones
  • Deal: We couldn't find a deal on this, but think it's an amazing investment for the price.
  • How to buy: Purchase on Amazon.
