Mozilla's MDN web docs team will be pausing support for DevRel sponsorship, Hacks blog, and Tech Speakers after Mozilla laid off nearly 25% of its workforce in its attempt to restructure its business model. The MDN web docs team will also be cutting back on staff and programs which will affect Mozilla developer programs, developer events and advocacy, and MDN tech writing.
More:
- MDN co-Founder and CEO Mitchell Baker explains in detail the reasons for the MDN changes here.
- Mozilla's layoffs were a part of the company's larger goal to organize a "new product organization" beyond its flagship web browser to create new revenue streams and ship products faster. The company laid off 250 employees, including their Developer Tools employees and the entire MDN team.

Apple backtracked on a move that forced WordPress to add in-app purchases, which would have made it possible for Apple to get a 30% cut. The tech giant additionally issued a rare apology for attempting to do so in the first place.
More:
- The news comes after WordPress founding developer Matt Mullenweg tweeted Friday Apple had forced WordPress to monetize its iOS app to get a 30% pay cut, sparking outrage.
- While WordPress does offer paid services, the free WordPress iOS app makes it possible to build and manage websites from your iPhone or iPad for free. The WordPress.com site, however, sells domain names and website packages.
- Apple's apology: "We believe the issue with the WordPress app has been resolved," the company wrote in a statement. "Since the developer removed the display of their service payment options from the app, it is now a free stand-alone app and does not have to offer in-app purchases. We have informed the developer and apologize for any confusion that we have caused."
- More WordPress news: the stable version of WordPress 5.5 was recently released, but some are experiencing issues that may have caused at least 50,000 sites to break. Learn how to fix the issue here.
