Facebook software engineer Ashok Chandwaney resigned after publicly stating he could no longer work for a company he believes is "profiting off hate" in the US and worldwide.
More:
- In a letter posted on Facebook’s internal message board obtained by The Washington Post, Chandwaney says the social media giant doesn't incorporate its "five core values" (Be Bold, Focus on Impact, Move Fast, Be Open and Build Social Value) when it comes to dealing with hate speech.
- Hate speech-related incidences Chandwaney specifically mentioned include Facebook's decision to leave up President Donald Trump’s post that said, “When the looting starts, the shooting starts." In June, two employees publicly resigned over how Facebook dealt with Trump's comment as well, while employees stated a virtual walkout.
- The Washington Post also reports other Facebook employees' mood has "worsened" as the company continues to deal with offensive content, foreign disinformation, extremists, and more in controversial ways.
- Recently, employees also expressed outrage after the company left up Trump’s claims about mail-in voting and a post suggesting voters should vote more than once.
- Chandwaney worked at Facebook for five and a half years.
