The WordPress core team is considering dropping support for Internet Explorer 11 (IE11), but is asking the wider community to submit feedback by March 18 before making a decision.
- The team published a post last week, that has only recently captured attention, revealing a new proposal to end IE11 support after total usage fell below ~1%, according to data from StatCounter’s GlobalStats, the W3 Counter, and WordPress.com.
- The team argues dropping support would result in smaller scripts, lower maintenance burden, and decrease build times.
- However, the team notes that some who use IE11 — such as financial, governmental, and educational institutions, as well as screen readers that use IE11 — will not be able to upgrade, posing a potential dilemma.
- The news comes several months after Microsoft announced Microsoft 365 and Teams apps would drop support for IE11. The Microsoft Teams web app stopped supporting IE 11 in November 2020, while the rest of Microsoft 365 apps and services will drop support for IE11 starting Aug. 17, 2021.
