What you need to know about DJI’s new 6K drone camera, the Zenmuse X7

Last night, DJI showed off a new professional series drone camera, the Zenmuse X7. The new camera will retail for $2,699 and will start shipping in early November. This is what we know about the new aerial camera.

It’s built for high-end filmmaking: The Zenmuse X7 is being marked by DJI as a compact Super 35 camera. The Zenmuse integrates a gimbal, specially built for filmmaking, resulting in high quality resolution. This may be an essential piece of equipment for filmmakers; many use helicopters and other aircraft to capture the same footage.

It’s not a drone: The Zenmuse X7 is not an all-in-one solution. The Zenmuse is a digital camera optimized for filmmakers, that can be attached to DJI’s high-end, industrial grade drones. Customers would have to purchase the camera and then attach it to an Inspire 2.

It’s capable of capturing intensive video formats: The Zenmuse includes a 24 MP CMOS sensor, rated at 14 stops of dynamic range, which promises extraordinary detail. It also offers 6K CinemaDNG and 5.2K Apple ProRes codecs and can shoot RAW video at 20 fps and stills at 24 MP. The camera also features a Cinema Color System, which offers more flexibility in the editing booth and can imitate the behavior of film cameras to preserve information.

Lenses are sold separately: Like most digital cameras, the base price of Zenmuse X7 does not include a lens. Customers have the choice of acquiring 16mm, 24mm, 35mm or 50mm lenses, all which have a maximum f/2.8 aperture. The lenses sell between $1,199 and $1,299. — ENGADGET
