Fortem Technologies debuted a system that can detect and capture drones. DroneHunter uses radar to track down UAVs in a specific area. Once detected, a large six-rotor drone either shoots a net at the unwelcome drone, or tethers it to the larger drone. The system can target UAVs flying up to 100 mph. Utah-based Fortem raised $5.5 million to develop the system, which currently is only available to defense and federal government buyers. - TECHCRUNCH

FAA drone registrations have now topped one million. Nearly 880,000 hobbyists have registered their drones with the Federal Aviation Administration, Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao announced this week. An additional 122,000 commercial and other drones are now individually registered. While the FAA began requiring registrations two years ago, the system faced a legal challenge last year and was temporarily disbanded until last month. Hobbyists are now required to pay a $5 fee and display an ID number on their drones. - THEDRIVE

New York state police will begin using drones for disaster response, traffic safety and other duties. The program involving 18 drones will kick off this month in Western New York before it is expanded throughout the state. Governor Andrew Cuomo said the drones are less expensive than manned aircraft and are safer for officers. Troopers who operate the drones will have to undergo 32 hours of training and receive an FAA certification. - NYDN

A $31,500 donation will help the Los Angeles Police Department purchase four DJI drones. The Police Commission approved a yearlong drone pilot program last year. The drones will include a DJI Spark, two Phantoms and a Matrice. The department will most commonly use the Phantom drones, Assistant Chief Beatrice Girmala said. The Spark could be used in small space and the Matrice could accommodate heavier weather and terrain, she noted. - LATIMES
