Inside Drones (Apr 13th, 2018)

Drones are monitoring traffic and perimeters at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California. In the wake of the Las Vegas shooting, festival organizers chose to deploy drones this year to improve safety. While the festival runs April 13-15 and April 20-22, the drones began watching over the festival grounds on Thursday. "It takes us a few minutes to get an officer to a perimeter breach but a drone takes 45 seconds," Police Sgt. Dan Marshall told the Los Angeles Times. Festival promoter Goldenvoice is paying for the drones, which won't fly directly over the crowd, per FAA regulations. Attendees are barred from bringing their own drones to the event. - LATIMES

Law enforcement deployed anti-drone guns during a NASCAR race weekend. The Australian counter-drone firm DroneShield provided three of its products – DroneGun, DroneSentinel, and DroneSentry – to help police detect and take down any rogue drones flying over the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. The race at Texas Motor Speedway took place on Sunday. DroneShield has provided coverage from drones during the Boston Marathon and the Davos Economic Forum in Switzerland. - DRONELIFE

Police in Wisconsin used a thermal-camera drone to search for a fleeing suspect. Officers deployed a spike strip to stop a suspect who was fleeing from them in a car on Thursday. Once the tires were deflated, the suspect escaped on foot. A drone and a canine officer were both deployed in the search, and the dog was able to track down the suspect before the UAV. The Greenfield Police Department purchased the drone four months ago, primarily to take photos and map out crime scenes. - NOW NEWS GROUP

An ecologist is using a drone to survey bird nests and breeding pairs in southern Florida. Fort Myers ecologist Church Roberts recently surveyed colonies of breeding animals on Lenore Island, on the Caloosahatchee River on the southwest Gulf Coast. His consulting firm earned a grant from the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program for the drone flights and survey. Results will generate counts of the animals, which can benefit wildlife-policy proposals and education. - NEWS-PRESS

France is considering new drone requirements. The proposed rules would require certain drone pilots to identify their drones using an electronic identification system. The rule, which could take effect as early as July, would only apply to UAVs weighing more than 800 grams, or about 1.8 pounds. The weight requirement means drones such as the DJI Mavic Pro, Spark, and Air would be exempt. The French Federation of Model Airplanes recently published a draft outlining the proposed requirements. - DRONE DJ
