New Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has opposed FAA registration requirements for drones. Specifically, Kavanaugh - a DC circuit judge - ruled in 2017 that the government cannot force all recreational drone pilots to register with the Federal Aviation Administration. In the ruling, he wrote that the registration rule "is unlawful as applied to model aircraft.” The FAA still requires people to register their drones online. President Trump nominated Kavanaugh as Justice Anthony Kennedy’s replacement this week. - BLOOMBERG

A journalist was arrested for flying a drone above the Thai cave where a soccer team was trapped. The man, who was not named in reports, flew the drone close to a helicopter deployed to rescue the 12 boys and their soccer coach, who were trapped in the Tham Luang cave system. (The team has since been rescued.) The journalist allegedly claimed that a Thai air force officer granted him permission to use the drone, which the Royal Thai Air Force denied. It is unclear if the man will face charges. - 9NEWS

An annual "Women in Drones" event will take place September 5 through 7 in Las Vegas. InterDrone’s fourth annual luncheon pays homage to women in the commercial drone industry. Panel discussions, drone information sessions and keynotes speeches are on the schedule, along with demonstrations of new drone technology. Hosting the event will be Suzanne Lemieux, the UAS lead and manager for the American Petroleum Institute (API). “This is an incredible time for women to enter into this emerging field, to participate in these new developments, and to pave a pathway for more girls to enter into STEM careers," Lemieux said. The event takes place at the Rio Hotel. - DRONELIFE

People can now fly drones over George's Lake Lanier, as long as they obtain permission from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps, which built the reservoir in the 1950s, had previously banned drone flights above the lake northeast of Atlanta. It recently opened up operators to seek permission to fly drones 30 days in advance; requests can be submitted by mail. - AJC
