Inside Drones (Jul 27th, 2018)

Amazon received a patent for aerial warehouses that would deploy drones for deliveries. The company describes its airborne fulfillment centers as airships that would float at high altitudes - possibly up to 45,000 feet - and deploy UAVs to deliver items from their inventories to designated locations. According to the patent, the centers would be propped by blimps and positioned over metro areas for faster deliveries. The drones would be able to navigate horizontally using little or no power, except to stabilize or guide their descent. The idea is to drastically lower the energy and costs required to fly the vehicles. - THE MERCURY NEWS

The U.K. is exploring new proposals for its draft drone bill. One of the rules under consideration would ban anyone under the age of 18 from owning a drone weighing more than 250 grams (0.55 pounds), unless the device is owned and registered by an adult. (Most drone insurance policies require a minimum age of 18). Other proposed rules would require users to take online safety tests and register drones weighing more than 250 grams, which coincides with U.S. drones rules. The U.K. has already banned people from flying drones above 400 feet and within a kilometer of airport boundaries. The new drone bill is due out later this year. - BBC

DJI introduced a new drone protection plan that covers replacement parts and accidents. Enterprise Shield, which comes in Basic and Plus, covers incidents involving pilot error, water damage and signal interference. The Basic includes two product replacements for damaged drones and other parts (excluding XT and XT2) and free two-day shipping. Meanwhile, the Shield offers product repair, unlimited product replacement and free overnight shipping. It is considered a more thorough version of the company's general protection plan, which caps its replacement service after a year. - DRONELIFE

Skysense has partnered with Avansig to develop an indoor surveillance drone. According to the Drive, the drone can patrol indoor areas on its own using a drone-charging station developed by Skysense. The UAV can also live stream footage and alert its user about any threats inside a building. Avansig CEO David Trillo said that drones usually "work best in surveillance applications and are more cost effective," plus the user doesn't "need to install so many cameras, which reduces the cost” of security. The companies are creating the drone for the multinational security company Prosegur. - THE DRIVE
