Inside Drones (Jul 31st, 2018)

Details about the upcoming DJI Mavic 2 were exposed in an apparent leak. The company recently postponed the drone's launch, saying that the user experience wasn't up to par. However, DJI provided the details and an image of the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom to the British retailer Argos, which published it in its biannual catalog. The new Mavic 2 Pro will be equipped with a one-inch Hasselblad CMOS sensor, and the Mavic 2 Zoom will come with a 2X optical zoom (24mm to 48mm). The drone is capable of flying up to 31 minutes, at a range of 9 kilometers. No prices were listed. A DJI spokesperson told Gizmodo that the early look "hints at the many exciting features and capabilities DJI will announce at the proper time." - TECHCRUNCH

The California Air National Guard has deployed a Reaper drone to help fight the Carr Fire in Redding, California. According to the Department of Defense, the drone provides a bird's-eye view of the fire, which can help officials direct resources to fight it. CAL FIRE intelligence officer Capt. Robert DeCamp said firefighters have benefited from drone assistance during previous wildfires. However, the Carr Fire has "gotten so bad that recreational drones don’t quite cut it, and the Air Force’s MQ-9 Reaper drone has been put into play," he said. The Reaper has wide-range sensors to collect data about heat, movement and location, and provide high-res images. The data allows first responders to better prioritize their resources by tracking the fire’s movement. - DEFENSE.GOV

The Nevada Drone Center of Excellence for Public Safety has launched, with a mission to reduce drone incursions in the skies and promote safe and legal drone use. The Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems launched the center, which is designed to cut down on drone near-misses with commercial aircraft and promote safer drone flying, potentially saving lives. Las Vegas, Nevada also happens to have the most registered drone users in the U.S. The dynamic makes the Nevada Drone Center of Excellence for Public Safety "a natural step as drones increasingly become a bigger part of our daily lives," said Paul Anderson, executive director of the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development. - THE DRIVE

Police are investigating two near-misses involving drones at the Jersey Airport in the Channel Islands. Pilots of two separate aircraft reported that a drone flew within a few hundreds meters of their planes as they approached the runway. It is illegal on the island of Jersey to fly a drone within two nautical miles of an airport, without permission from air traffic control. 20 drone incidents have been reported in Jersey over the last three years. - JERSEY EVENING POST
