Inside Drones (Dec 17th, 2018)

1. Authorities still don't know if a drone collided with a passenger jet over Tijuana, Mexico last week. Aeroméxico has launched an investigation to determine if a drone caused damage to the nose of the Boeing 737 jetliner as it approached the runway on Dec. 12. No one was injured. On Monday, Fstoppers reported that the plane was visibly damaged from a mid-air collision, but there are no facts to support that there was a drone involved. However, the aviation site FsMex.com cited a source who indicated that a drone struck the plane on its final approach. - WSJ

2. Drones will patrol some of Australia's most popular beaches this summer. Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) and Westpac signed a deal to deploy 51 drones over the New South Wales and Queensland coasts, which will provide surveillance of the beaches and keep an eye out for distressed swimmers. The announcement comes after Westpac signed a three-year deal with the Ripper Group to trial shark-detecting drones across Queensland and NSW last summer. - ZDNET

3. New research suggests that drones with thermal imaging cameras are a better way to locate nests of the European nightjar, a nocturnal bird, than searching for them on foot. The research was presented at the British Ecological Society's meeting on Monday. "The current methods of searching for nightjar nests on foot are expensive and can pose a health and safety risk for people, particularly when accessing clearfell worksites", said Mike Shewring, a Ph.D. student at Cardiff University, which recently conducted a study to test the drones in South Wales. - PHYS.ORG
