Inside Drones (Jan 4th, 2019)

1. The Safir Project will begin testing out drone tech and traffic management systems in Belgium this year. “It is about testing 10 drones with different purposes, applications and IT systems,” said DronePort CEO Mark Vanlook. The goal is to help the E.U. create a framework for how to operate commercial drones across countries. The Safir project, which is comprised of 13 public organizations and private companies, is partially funded by the European Commission. “The market is Chinese dominated right now,” said Ulrike Frank, a policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations. “And if Europe wants to catch up, it first has to unify rules and regulations, which will incentivize European drone producers to engage not just with their country but the entire European market.” - THE DRIVE

2. Heathrow and Gatwick airports in the U.K. are expected to invest millions of dollars into anti-drone equipment after the recent drone attacks. Nearly 1,000 flights were delayed or grounded at Gatwick from the attacks, which occurred in late December and are still under investigation. According to Forbes, the airports may have ordered the Drone Dome anti-drone system from Israeli manufacturer Rafael to further protect against attacks. “It's vital that action is taken to regulate the use of drones near airports, and we urge the government to consider further proposals,” a spokesman for Virgin Atlantic said.  - FORBES

3. The city of Coventry in England is gearing up to ban drones from parks and other open spaces. The City Council could approve the ban after London's Gatwick Airport experienced illegal drone activity last month. Under the proposal, people seen flying drones in parks or open spaces would be asked to stop immediately and leave. "The concerns are about the nuisance caused by the noise of drones, privacy due to drones carrying surveillance equipment, and the potential danger they could cause to wildlife, animals and people particularly when landing," a council report said. - BBC
