Facebook has acquired Source3, a tech startup that tracks users who share content without permission. Source3 will be fully integrated into Facebook rather than operating as a standalone company. Facebook introduced Rights Manager in 2015 to fight video piracy, but as the company moves toward long-form, exclusive video it will need something more robust to ensure that its content is safe and that its content partners' rights are protected. — BUSINESS INSIDER

WhatsApp is hiring for a number of marketing and business positions related to monetization. Last month Facebook added ads to its other messaging app Messenger, but WhatsApp founders have said repeatedly that they would not show ads on the app. WhatsApp could monetize in other ways: digital payment systems or communication tools between businesses and customers (similar to Apple's Business Chat). WhatsApp has 1.2 billion global users and is popular in emerging markets. — ADWEEK

Instagram's advertising value is driving Facebook stock higher and Snap stock lower, according to analysts. The picture-heavy format of the app is similar to Snapchat's format, but Instagram has a permanent feed for ads while Snapchat's content disappears in 24 hours. Instagram also introduced an e-commerce option last year. In July, Facebook's stock has been up by 11 percent and Snap's has been down by 15 percent. — MARKETWATCH

More than 500 cafeteria workers at the headquarters of Facebook in Menlo Park, California, have unionized. The workers are contracted by Flagship Facility Services and are demanding higher wages to afford the cost of living in Silicon Valley. A Guardian story about two Facebook cafeteria workers who are married with children and living in a car garage has drawn attention to the plight of workers in the region. The union, Unite Here Local 19, represents 4,500 workers in Silicon Valley. — BUSINESS INSIDER

Facebook is developing a smart speaker with a 15-inch touch display, according to Digitimes. The news follows a recent report about Facebook's patent for a modular hardware device that could function as a speaker with a screen. There is already a small pilot production taking place at Pegatron Technology, where the speakers will be manufactured. The device is being built for a first-quarter 2018 launch. — TECHCRUNCH

Facebook's live-streaming 360-degree video can now be viewed in 4k resolution. Currently only Samsung Gear VR (and not Oculus Rift) can support VR viewing at that resolution. The company announced a host of improvements to the platform in addition to the higher fidelity: an option to stabilize shaky footage, heatmap support so creators can see what parts of the images get the most attention, fundraising buttons for nonprofits, and Scheduled Live posts to help gather audiences. Facebook will also vet and certify third-party hardware and software that works well with its Live 360-degree video. — VERGE
