YouTube will increase its staff 25 percent to more than 10,000 employees in 2018 to better moderate video content following a series of scandals. YouTube has faced accusations that it allowed bad actors to game its recommendation algorithms to reach children with videos not meant for younger viewers. It has also fostered a community of creators that make videos that put kids in concerning, and exploitive, situations. YouTube also says it will create regular reports where it’s transparent about the aggregate data regarding the flags it receives, and the actions it takes to remove videos and comments that violate its content policies. –TECHCRUNCH

The Australian government plans to open an inquiry into the impact Google and Facebook have on the media industries. The Australian Consumer & Competition Commission said it will look at “the impact digital search engines, social media platforms and other digital content aggregation platforms are having on competition in media and advertising services markets.” A preliminary report will be published early December 2018, with a final report due early June 2019. The probe comes as several traditional Australian media companies have seen declining revenue, especially in print and television. -VARIETY

Files Go is now available worldwide. Files Go is an app that helps Android users free up space, find files quickly and share files offline with people close by. The program had launched in beta in November. It is built for Go edition devices, but works with any Android device that runs Lollipop 5.0 or higher. The app, on average, will save users about 1 GB of space. Google also announced a suite of new features and apps today that are tailored for India, alongside the launch of Android Oreo Go edition for low-end phones with less than 1GB of RAM. –THE VERGE

Rest easy internet, Google has now fixed its beer emoji as well. Google recently fixed its cheeseburger emoji after internet complaints, placing the cheese on top of the burger patty as opposed to under it. With the burger fixed, users turned their attention to the rest of Google’s emoji catalog. Users noticed that the beer emoji inexplicably floated above an air gap that separated it from the actual liquid. Google acted quickly, creating an updated beer emoji that filled the glass to the top. –BUSINESS INSIDER
