I've certainly referenced Transcendental Meditation (TM) in this newsletter before, but I've never dedicated a full issue to the practice, for a few notable reasons.
First, I haven't done it! While it is, at its core, a mantra-based meditation technique, Transcendental Meditation is taught specifically by paid practitioners through an organization called the Global Country of World Peace. For an individual to take a TM course, it can run upwards of $1,000 for a series of sessions.
Secondly, it comes with a lot of baggage. Celebrities regularly promote its efficacy, and the founder of the TM movement, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, faced criticism for turning a relatively simple meditation technique into a $300M empire. The exclusivity and mystery surrounding the movement can sound, understandably, a little culty.
But, I thought it would be helpful to gather the basic information about the practice in one place, as both a reference guide and tool for those considering taking a course.
