- Covington vs. Masvidal would be another high-profile grudge match. The two men used to be close friends and training partners at the American Top Team in Florida. According to Masvidal, the falling out began when Covington “ripped off” his long-time coach Paulino Hernandez.
- Covington is coming off a huge fifth-round TKO win over former champion Tyron Woodley two weeks ago. Masvidal, meanwhile, last fought in July at UFC 251 and lost to current champion Kamaru Usman via decision.
