Dana White confirmed that the UFC is still working on a fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. The two fighters have been previously matched up for a total of five times already, but none ever came to fruition.
- White admits it “almost scares” him to try and book the fight again, but feels the need to since “the people want to see it.”
- The UFC has been trying to book the fight since 2015. The two men share equal responsibility for the first four failures, as they’ve both pulled out due to injuries and health issues.
- The most recent attempt was slated for UFC 249 in April. But due to the COVID-19 restrictions in his home country of Russia, Nurmagomedov remained locked down and didn’t make it to the fight.
- Top contender Justin Gaethje ended up as the replacement to fight Ferguson in the rescheduled UFC 249 card for May. He won via fifth-round TKO to become the interim lightweight champion, and will now challenge Nurmagomedov for the undisputed title at UFC 254.
