UFC welterweight contender Stephen Thompson turned down a fight against undefeated rising star Khamzat Chimaev. According to the number five-ranked “Wonderboy,” he sees no benefit in fighting someone unranked like Chimaev.
- The 26-year-old Chimaev began making waves in the UFC in July when he won two straight fights in ten days. His biggest win happened on Sept. 19, when he knocked out Gerald Meerschaert in 17 seconds in a middleweight fight.
- Chimaev has been jumping around between middleweight (185 pounds) and welterweight (170 pounds) in his last three UFC fights alone. With the success he’s achieving, he feels he’s now ready to take on the champions of both divisions. The UFC also planned a main event fight for Chimaev, next.
- From his end, Thompson cannot see the logic in having Chimaev “jump past everybody.” Instead, he wants top-five opponents like Leon Edwards or Jorge Masvidal.
