Inside Music (Dec 13th, 2019)

Each Friday I'll highlight a few of the most notable songs and albums being released today that you should know about.

1. Notable music releases for 12/13/19

  • Harry Styles - Fine Line
  • Grimes - "4ÆM"
  • Foo Fighters - 00999925
  • Hayley Kiyoko - I'm Too Sensitive For This S*** EP

While Harry Styles' new album will likely steal the attention this week because it side-steps the sophomore slump, there are still a few other notable releases. Grimes performed her new song "4ÆM" at the Game Awards on Thursday night where it was announced that the song will be in Cyberpunk 2077. The game soundtrack will also include new songs from Run The Jewels and A$AP Rocky.

Hayley Kiyoko's EP featuring the song "Runaway," comes one day after she hosted Billboard's Women in Music 2019 — where last year she took home the Rising Star award.

2. Song recommendation: Kesha - "Raising Hell"

From Hugh McIntyre: Forbes music journalist

"Kesha recently returned with the first single from her upcoming album and it's been on repeat ever since it dropped. "Raising Hell" is one of the best pop bops of the year, but it's been seriously under-appreciated."

Kesha has also just released the latest single, "Resentment" from the album "High Road" which is set to be released January 31st, 2020. "Resentment" features some big-name guests like Sturgill Simpson, Brian Wilson, and Wrabel in the passionate acoustic song and layers the vocals in a powerful way. It's a song worth checking out even if you don't think of yourself as a Kesha fan.

3. Selena Gomez is officially back, with the announcement that her new album, "Rare" will be released on January 10. Gomez released two new songs in 2019, but it was unknown if there would be a full album or when it would come out. "Rare" features 13 songs, including the two released singles, and contains guest appearances by Kid Cudi and 6LACK. 4. In a follow-up to Tycho's excellent 2019 album, "Weather," the band is already back with a new EP. The short, three-song album includes the new song "Stress" as well as an instrumental version of "No Stress” and the original of "No Stress" featuring singer Saint Sinner. Tycho has also dropped an official music video for "No Stress" which is a visual mix of the song's behind-the-scenes recording and live performance. — LIVE MUSIC BLOG

5. Indie musician Phoebe Bridgers, Fiona Apple, and singer of The National, Matt Berninger, collaborated on a cover of Simon and Garfunkel's “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night.” The new song updates the classic in a similar way, with recent news headlines overlaid on top of "Silent Night." The song was always meant to be a somber self-reflection and the new cover aims to provide that for a younger generation. — CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

6. Charli XCX has released "Bricks," yet another new song in a year full of new music and projects for her. The song is a collaboration with Tommy Genesis and never got a proper release when it originally appeared in the 2018 film, "Assassination Nation." Charli XCX also released a new full-length album in 2019 and put out a Netflix documentary about the formation of her new band Nasty Cherry. — ROLLING STONE

7. "Hamilton" creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda has announced his new musical movie, "In The Heights," will be released next summer. The movie is an adaptation of his first Broadway play of the same name, about a bodega owner who saves every penny from his daily grind as he imagines a better life. The trailer for the 2020 release shows stars Anthony Ramos, Jimmy Smits, and Miranda, among others. The film was directed by Jon Chu who also directed "Crazy Rich Asians." — VULTURE

8. Rewound is a new music app that adds back the nostalgia of the iPod's click wheel to your iPhone. The app will connect with and play your Apple Music library making you furiously spin your thumb, the way the devices from Apple used to. Although fun, be aware the app serves no utility other than a trip down memory lane. For Spotify users, the app will also be adding a way to connect with that music service in the near future. — THE VERGE

9. The Rihanna documentary which was announced in 2016 appears to be approaching a release date. Amazon has reportedly paid $25 million for the right to the movie, which director Pete Berg says is "a character study," rather than a music film. No title or release date has been announced yet. The news comes shortly after it was announced that Apple paid $25 million for a Billie Eilish documentary. — COMPLEX

10. Vampire Weekend is promoting their 2019 album release with a slight Christmas-injected performance of "Harmony Hall" on The Late Late Show. The band added a kids' choir to the performance of the song who also opened the tune with a few lines from "Christmas Time Is Here." The performance marks the band's first return to a late show since heavily promoting their first new album in six years, "Father Of The Bride." — BILLBOARD
