Inside Music (Jan 10th, 2020)

Each Friday I'll highlight a few of the most notable songs and albums being released today that you should know about.

1. Notable music releases out today

  • Selena Gomez - "Rare"
  • Future - "Life is Good (Ft. Drake)"
  • Georgia - "Seeking Thrills"
  • John Legend - "Conversations in the Dark"
  • Echosmith - "Lonely Generation"

The reviews are just coming in, but so far it sounds like critics are really liking Selena Gomez's new album. Chris DeVille at Stereogum says, "Rare’s stylish assortment of songs is refreshing," while Leah Greenblatt at EW says, "For all its heavy messaging, lightness actually feels like the album’s hallmark."

Additionally, Echosmith, made famous by their song "Cool Kids," has a new album. If you're looking for some good, pulsating pop, give Georgia a listen. Lastly, John Legend released a new single today called, "Conversations in the Dark."

2. Moog Music just released a new 17-minute documentary that takes a look at the soundtrack of the recent hit film, "Uncut Gems," starring Adam Sandler. "Behind the Soundtrack: ‘Uncut Gems’ With Daniel Lopatin" discusses the movie's score and how it was made fairly spontaneously from moment-to-moment. The music was also heavily influenced by 70s' prog-rock, and ultimately turned out to be a pretty unique sound for the film. — VARIETY

3. Nielsen released its 2019 Year-End Report [PDF] and disclosed a whole bunch of interesting statistics, including the most popular selling vinyl records of the decade. Topping the list was The Beatles’ "Abbey Road" which sold around 558,000 copies between 2010 and 2019. It's no surprise, then, that "Abbey Road" was also the top-selling vinyl record of 2019 as well. Two other notable top-selling vinyl records in the last 10 years include "Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1" soundtrack and Lana Del Rey's "Born to Die" album. — STEREOGUM

4. The first single, "Good News," off Mac Miller's new album is out now. The full album, "Circles," will be released next Friday, but for now, the new song and its psychedelic video are the first taste at what will be Miller's last studio album, according to his family. Following the album release, there will be three pop-ups on January 17 and 18 for fans in Los Angeles, New York, and Pittsburgh, each featuring exclusive merchandise and listening parties. — COMPLEX

5. Master & Dynamic just dropped a worthy upgrade to its previous wireless earphones, in the form of the MW07 Plus. The new features include active noise canceling and battery life that's three times better. The new earphones also include the Bluetooth 5.0 spec for improved listening range. Listed at $299, the MW07 Plus earphones put up a compelling proposition against Apple's AirPods Pro and Sony's WF-1000XM3. — UNCRATE

6. Soundcloud is bringing some of its desktop features to its mobile iOS app in a new update. SoundCloud creators will be able to edit track information like updating artwork, song titles, descriptions, genre, and privacy settings through the mobile app. In addition, users that are Pro subscribers will be able to take advantage of Spotlight features through the app as well. Spotlight allows users to pin a few select tracks to your profile. Updates for the Android mobile app will be coming shortly. — MUSIC BUSINESS WORLDWIDE

7. Khalid is back with his first new song of the year titled, "Eleven." Speaking with Zane Lowe on Apple Music's Beats 1 radio, Khalid said, "[Eleven] reminds me of that Timbaland era with Aaliyah where music just felt so good. You just wanted to turn it on and just drive to nowhere." The artist also described how his mom is an R&B fan and this song was a nod to all those musicans and the music that came before him. — HYPEBEAST

8. Emotional rock band Bright Eyes looks like they're making a comeback in 2020. Although a bit cryptic and vague, the band posted a visualization on its new Instagram account, along with the hashtag #brighteyes2020. The band's last album, "The People's Key," was released in 2011. While Bright Eyes hasn't been active since, its lead singer Conor Oberst has been, most recently teaming up with Phoebe Bridgers for the group, Better Oblivion Community Center. — BILLBOARD

9. There were a lot of headphones coming out of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but to simplify things, Gear Patrol rounded up its top nine of the 2020 show. Among the top are Jabra's Elite Active 75t because of the added sweat resistance, as well as the tiny, petite Klipsch T10 True Wireless Earphones. On the over-the-ear side, Sennheiser's HD 450BT Headphones come in at a very reasonable $220. — GEAR PATROL

10. Ozzy Osborne and Elton John have collaborated on the title song off Osborne's new album, "Ordinary Man." The new song not only features "The Piano Man," but also includes Guns & Roses' Duff McKagan and Slash, as well as Red Hot Chili Peppers' drummer Chad Smith. The album is out on February 21 and can be pre-ordered now. — PITCHFORK
