Inside Podcasting (Dec 3rd, 2019)

1. Time Magazine says that 1619, Mobituaries, Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend, Scattered, Decoder Ring, Last Days of August, Blank Check with Griffin and David, You're Wrong About... and Moonface are the ten best podcasts of 2019. While I have listened and enjoyed many of these shows, I'm especially excited that Moonface has made the list, as this Thursday I'll interview creator James Kim for season two of Inside Podcasting. Please let me know if you have questions you'd like me to ask James.

For those of you who haven't listened to Moonface yet, Time says "James Kim’s fiction podcast immediately draws the listener into the restaurants and dive bars of Downey, California outside of Los Angeles... As he tries to bridge the emotional and linguistic gap, the show trusts that non–Korean speakers will understand the sentiments, if not every word, of their conversations: the struggle to be understood is universal."

[Writer's note: please be advised that Moonface contains sexual content.]

2. Tomorrow is the last day first-time subscribers can sign up for Luminary at a 50 percent discount for a full year ($3.99 instead of $7.99 per month). The deal, which has been on offer for 13 days, also comes with one month completely free. To help promote the offer, a few creators whose shows existed prior to joining the platform (e.g. Love + Radio and LGBTQ&A), have released a recent episode into their show's old RSS feed, which includes a call to fans to sign up for the discounted rate. The Bright Sessions creator Lauren Shippen, released a trailer-length installment promoting upcoming content from her team, and urging listeners to sign up for the service ("you can cancel at any time"). — LUMINARY

3. Welcome to our newish weekly feature "In the Box," where I link to noteworthy news from my inbox that I don't have time to cover in more depth.

In the Box — podcasts

  • Storybound, a collaboration between The Podglomerate and Lit Hub, arrives today. Each episode features a "top literary icon" reading his/her/their work (Darknet Diaries creator Jack Rhysider will be featured on the show in January!).
  • Seed-stage VC firm Floodgate has launched a podcast called Starting Greatness.
  • Two shows about climate change sound worth a listen: The third season of The Land I Trust features stories about how climate change is impacting our world. Climate 2020 explores where each presidential candidate stands on the issue.

 In the Box — news

5. Amanda Hickman at AIR Media has compiled a comprehensive set of resources regarding compensation in radio and podcasting. "Sharing salary information can go a long way towards leveling pay gaps...being able to see what other folks have submitted is a powerful motivator," writes Hickman. If you know of any resources or guides she missed, let her know

6. Podcast Movement show organizers have dropped the first two episodes of Podcast Movement Sessions' fourth season, which was recorded during the August 2019 conference. This time around, the podcast pulls tape from the event's Society, Culture and Advocacy track and features the creators of Ear Hustle, Believed, Gay Future, Atlanta Monster, 70 Million, Uncover: The Village, Stuff You Missed in History Class, Spoke Media, Lipstick and Vinyl and more.

7. Tink Media founder Lauren Passell has launched a podcast advent calendar in which she shares a holiday-themed podcast episode every day. "These are way better than those sh***y chocolates you're used to getting," writes Passell. The first episode tackles a Jesus conspiracy theory and the second features a Jewish comedian and his Rabbi brother discussing Hanukkah.

8. Last July, PodReacher founder Jaclyn Schiff published a list of 16 ways to increase your podcast's visibility, but it may be worth another read as you reassess your podcast goals for 2020. "Adjust your mindset for the long term, invest your effort in a few of these approaches and then adjust or add more as you get comfortable and start seeing results," writes Schiff. Recommendations range from the conventional (guest on similar shows, repurpose content) to ideas that may be a bit outside your comfort zone (leverage influencer marketing and text messaging). As Schiff says, "tread carefully."

9. Tip of the hat to Podcast Movement founder Dan Franks, without whom I might have missed a chance to check out Podswag, the perfect place to purchase presents for your nerdy podcast friends. Here you can find unique gifts such as a Longest Shortest Time onesie (only four left!), Office Ladies lounge pants, or a keychain with Marc Maron's face on it. Holiday shopping? Boom, done. You're welcome.

10. This video, in which comedy writer Aaron Nemo raps about The Daily host Michael Barbaro, is essential viewing.
