SiriusXM made some major moves of its own this year. The company purchased Stitcher for $325M, acquiring the podcast platform and distribution network, plus exclusive premium content and ad-free episodes of shows like "Freakonomics Radio," "How Did This Get Made?" and "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend." With the acquisition, Sirius claims to now have an "addressable audience" of 150 million listeners, including satellite radio and Pandora, which it purchased in 2018.
In June, SiriusXM acquired Simplecast, a podcast management and distribution platform used by podcasters Dax Shepard and Anna Faris, as well as Netflix, Blue Wire, and TechCrunch. SiriusXM said it planned to integrate Simplecast with AdsWizz, which it acquired when it purchased Pandora.
Finally, as teased earlier, Howard Stern reached a new five-year deal with SiriusXM this week that will keep him with the satellite radio company through 2025. "Now that I can work from home, I simply don’t have an excuse to quit," Stern said, referencing his insistence in recent years that he would soon retire.
