Conservative pundit Ann Coulter is scheduled to speak in the Bay Area tonight. Mountain View police are sending extra officers to Coulter's speaking engagement at the IFES Society Community Center. Liberty Forum of Silicon Valley, formerly known as the Conservative Forum, is hosting the event. Threats of violent protests and concerns from University of California, Berkeley officials resulted in Coulter canceling a Bay Area appearance last year. According to authorities, there have been no threats related to tonight's event. Mountain View police will designate a "free speech zone" for anyone who wants to exercise their right to free speech outside the Community Center. - NBCBAYAREA

BAY AREA FOOD NEWS

What could be cozier than a food and a fireplace on a rainy day like today? (Answer: very little.) Eater's got an excellent round-up of San Francisco restaurants and bars that feature a fireplace and thus, ultimate rainy night ambiance. Included on the list of 29 spots, we're particular fans of the old standby Fireside Bar on Irving, the rustic appeal of Kokkari Estiatorio, and the fireplace at the classic Big Four. Not mentioned on the list, and it's a great fireplace, is the crackling nook at Hillstone down by the Embarcadero.

A massive new beer hall opened this week in San Mateo. Serious Eats culinary director and cookbook author J. Kenji Lopez-Alt opened the two-story Wursthall yesterday evening. While the ground level serves cocktails and wine, the upstairs German-style beer hall fulfills all our Oktoberfest fantasies - year round. Wursthall will serve up new takes on German beer hall specialties, like Bratwurst and a chicken schnitzel sandwich, not to mention dozens of European and American beers on tap.

The team behind Koi Palace plans to bring dim sum to Chef Jonathan Waxman's former spot in Ghirardelli Square. Palette just recently applied for a liquor license and the concept is still in the planning stages but according to insiders, Palette will focus heavily on seafood, take advantage of the property's outdoor space, and likely have a to-go window.
