3. Throwback Thursday: The day Alex Trebek thwarted a San Francisco burglary.
With recent headlines on the "Jeopardy" host's cancer fight, it seems only fitting to look back on Trebek's wild San Francisco adventure. The year was 2011, and Trebek was in town to host the National Geographic World Championship, which was being held at Google headquarters. On the evening of July 25, Trebek and his wife bunked down at the Marriott Marquis, the hotel located at the corner of Fourth and Mission Streets. While they were sleeping, 56-year-old Lucinda Moyers allegedly crept into their room, swiping a variety of personal items from the couple.
Awakened by the early-morning incursion, Trebek (who was 71 at the time) sprang from bed and chased Moyers down the hall, snapping his Achilles tendon in the process. At the next day's NatGeo event, Trebek (who arrived on crutches) said that he then "fell in an ignominious heap, bruising my other leg in the process," but police managed to nab Moyers, eventually charging her with burglary and receiving stolen property.
