The FTC has banned SpyFone and its CEO, Scott Zuckerman, from the surveillance business after the company was found to be secretly harvesting and sharing data on people's movements, device usage, and online activities. The company sold real-time access to the data, which allowed stalkers and domestic abusers to track their targets, the FTC said.
- SpyFone also lacked basic security, leaving victims' personal information open to hackers and identity thieves.
- In addition to the ban, the FTC ordered SpyFone to delete all illegally harvested information and to notify device owners that the app was installed on their device.
- This is the first FTC ban on a spyware company.
