Russian cyber gang Evil Corp was responsible for last weekend's attack on Sinclair Broadcast Group. Evil Corp attacked Sinclair with the Macaw malware, which it developed.
- Sinclair said it's still working to determine what data was stolen.
- Multiple U.S. government agencies, including the Justice and Treasury departments, sanctioned Evil Corp in 2019 after it used its Dridex malware to steal over $100M from financial institutions in over 40 countries.
- American citizens aren't allowed to pay ransoms or interact with groups that have been sanctioned.
- There are no other publicly known victims of Macaw.
