214.4 million U.S.-based accounts were the victims of data breaches in 2021, a 50% increase YoY and the most of any country in the world, according to Surfshark. Globally, 952.8 million accounts were compromised between January-November, a 3.4% YoY increase from the same period in 2021.
- Iran was second on the list, with 159.1 million accounts being impacted.
- It saw the largest YoY growth as only 1.4 million accounts were compromised in 2020.
- India (86.6 million), Russia (26.9 million), and France (24.6 million) rounded out the top five.
- 506.6 million accounts were breached in the top five countries, more than the rest of the world combined.
