Instagram is testing a new standalone messaging app called Direct. Direct will remove the private messages from within the public Instagram into a separate app, and it is being tested in Chile, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, and Uruguay starting today. Installing Direct will make the inbox disappear from the Instagram app. If Direct goes global, it will become Facebook's third messaging app, in addition to WhatsApp and Messenger. Facebook introduced Messenger in a similar way, by shutting off messaging inside the Facebook app and forcing people to download Messenger to communicate directly. — QUARTZ

A group of 35 religious leaders have signed a letter asking Twitter to remove Trump's account. The rabbis, imams, and priests coordinated through the Interfaith Center of New York and expressed their concern that Trump was using Twitter as a platform for "incendiary and misleading images that fan the flames of religiously-based hatreds and prejudice." This group joins the British MPs and others calling for the deletion of Trump's account. Twitter has said that the company treats Trump's tweets differently because they are "newsworthy." — INDEPENDENT

Facebook has posted its year in review results. According to the company's blog post, the top three events that people discussed globally in 2017 were International Women's Day, the Superbowl, and the Las Vegas violence. The top three moments where people came to each other's aid were the earthquake in Mexico, Hurricane Harvey, and One Love Manchester (the benefit concert that raised more than $450,000 for those affected by the Manchester terror attack). And the top two times people connected for "offline' moments were the solar eclipse and the Women's March in Washington, DC on Jan. 21. — MASHABLE

There is a certain type of post trending on LinkedIn, and Buzzfeed has dubbed it "broetry." The posts use the same format: one sentence, one paragraph, a personal anecdote, and a life lesson. Josh Fechter, a 26-year-old digital marketing entrepreneur who has helped popularize the style of content, says he has more than 100 million views since he started posting in this style. He recently posted a how-to blog on his technique. Online marketers said they first noticed the popularity of these types of updates in September, and that the first two lines probably entice more clicks and that triggers LinkedIn's algorithms to promote the posts. — BUZZFEED
