Showtime's new five-part documentary series "The Trade" takes an unsparing, up-close look at the US opioid crisis. The film features intimate scenes with addicts and their families, alongside a birds-eye view taking in the full socio-political scope of the problem. (In addition to addicts, main characters include law enforcement officers and even Mexican poppy farmers.) "The Trade" was directed by Matthew Heineman, whose 2015 film "Cartel Land" focused on Mexican drug cartels and the vigilantes who fight against them. He also directed the 2017 film "City of Ghosts." "The Trade" premieres Friday on Showtime. – GUARDIAN
