TED LASSO: Sports comedy series starring Jason Sudeikis as an American football coach who's brought in to lead an English Premier League soccer team to victory. Sudeikis co-created the series with "Scrubs" vet Bill Lawrence, based on a series of promos he'd recorded for NBC Sports. [Apple TV+]
BOYS STATE: Feature documentary and "political coming-of-age story" chronicling a bold experiment, in which 1,000 17-year-old boys from Texas were challenged to form their own representative government from scratch. The film screened earlier this year at Sundance and was acquired by Apple and A24 as part of a record-breaking $12 million deal. [Apple TV+]
THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN: Original live-action fantasy film based on the children's novel by K.A. Applegate, about a silverback gorilla named Ivan (voiced by Sam Rockwell) who lives in a cage at a mall, but grows weary of captivity. Angelina Jolie, Danny DeVito, Brooklynn Pierce, and others provide more animal voices, while Bryan Cranston stars as the mall's owner. [Disney+]
MAGIC CAMP: Adam DeVine stars in this family comedy feature as a magician and former "magic camp" counselor who returns hoping to reignite his passion for the work. Also features Jeffrey Tambor, Gillian Jacobs, Aldis Hodge, and an ensemble of young newcomers as hapless rookie magicians. Director Mark Waters previously made "Mean Girls" and "Mr. Popper's Penguins." [Disney+]
ZOMBIES 2: This Disney Channel original is a sequel to 2018's "Zombies," a musical comedy about the romance between a zombie football player and his human cheerleader girlfriend. Stars Milo Manheim and Meg Donnelly return for the follow-up, in which young werewolves join the mix. [Disney+]
WEIRD BUT TRUE!: Educational series from National Geographic in which hosts Charlie Engelman and Carly Ciarrocchi use remote segments and in-studio experiments to teach kids about science. The show aired for two seasons on Nat Geo, and now moves to Disney+ for Season 3. [Disney+]
PROJECT POWER: Action sci-fi film about a pill that can give anyone unpredictable superpowers for five minutes. Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Dominique Fishback star as the unlikely trio who team up to get the drug off the streets. From co-directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman ("Nerve"). [Netflix]
TEENAGE BOUNTY HUNTERS: Debut crime comedy series about fraternal teenage twin sisters (Maddie Phillips and Anjelica Bette Fellini) in Atlanta who take a new job seeking out bail jumpers from a seasoned pro (Kadeem Hardison). [Netflix]
THE LEGEND OF KORRA: Classic animated Nickelodeon series that followed up on the action of "Avatar: The Last Airbender," which is also currently streaming in full on Netflix. Both series are set in a fantasy universe where individuals can manipulate (or "bend") natural elements to their will, as a martial arts practice. [Netflix]
GLOW UP: British reality competition series for aspiring make-up artists that airs on BBC Three in the U.K. It's back for a second season. [Netflix]
FEARLESS: Animated feature for kids about a teen gamer who must use his abilities to babysit three super-powered infants from space. [Netflix]
OCTONAUTS & THE CAVES OF SAC ACTUN: Animated feature film spun off from the "Octonauts" British kids series, about a team of anthropomorphic undersea adventurers. [Netflix]
3%: The new fourth season will be the last for this Brazilian sci-fi thriller series, which was the first Portuguese-language Netflix original. It's set in a dystopian future where only the top 3% of candidates get to move from an impoverished "Inland" colony to the more affluent world "Offshore." [Netflix]
THE GREAT HEIST (EL ROBO DEL SIGLO): Crime comedy from Argentina, based on a true story, about an audacious 2006 bank robbery in Acassuso that turned into a hostage situation. [Netflix]
WORLD'S TOUGHEST RACE: ECO CHALLENGE FIJI: Bear Grylls hosts this reality adventure series in which 66 teams from 30 countries embark on a physically and emotionally demanding 11-day expedition across Fiji. "Survivor" creator Mark Burnett hosts. [Amazon]
BERNIE THE DOLPHIN 2: Family film following up 2018's "Bernie the Dolphin," about two siblings (Logan Allen and Lola Sultan) who team up to rescue their dolphin friend from a kidnapping plot. Kevin Sorbo co-stars. [Amazon and Hulu]
VARIOUS DISCOVERY SERIES: Several new seasons of shows from Discovery-owned networks -- including ID, Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, Discovery, TLC, and Aniplex -- hit Hulu today. This includes episodes of "A Crime to Remember," "Caribbean Life," "Chopped," "House Hunters International," "Naked and Afraid," "Property Brothers: Buying & Selling," and "Say Yes to the Dress." CARMEN AND LOLA (CARMEN Y LOLA): Drama feature from Spain about two young Roma women (Rosy Rodriguez and Zaira Morales) who fall in love, only to find themselves rejected by their traditional community. Arantxa Echevarría wrote and directed. [HBO]
SATURDAY, AUGUST 15
BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN): Margot Robbie reprises the role of Harley Quinn from "Suicide Squad" in this over-the-top 2020 DC Comics-inspired action-comedy. Quinn -- newly separated from her ex, The Joker -- joins forces with Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), and Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) to take out the brutal crime lord Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). RITA: The Danish comedy-drama series returns to Netflix for a fifth and final season. Mille Dinesen stars as Rita Madsen, an unconventional teacher and single mother. [Netflix]
STRANGER: The South Korean crime thriller series is back to Netflix for a second season. Cho Seung-woo and Bae Doona co-star as a prosecutor and police lieutenant who team up to investigate mysterious crimes as well as government corruption. [Netflix]
SUNDAY, AUGUST 16
LOVECRAFT COUNTRY: Freshman horror drama series based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff, from creator Misha Green ("Underground") and executive producers Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams. Jonathan Majors and Jurnee Smollett star as a Black couple on a trip across the segregated American South in the 1950s who encounter both entrenched racism and supernatural monsters during their journey. Aunjanue Ellis, Michael Kenneth Williams, Courtney B. Vance, Tony Goldwyn, and Jamie Chung co-star. [HBO]
THE CIRCUS: The second half of the political documentary series' fifth season debuts on Sunday night. The new episodes pick up after the Super Tuesday primaries and cover the start of the coronavirus lockdown as well as the nationwide protests following the killing of Geoge Floyd. [Showtime]
