The film adaptation of the Broadway musical "In the Heights" brought in $11.4 million at the weekend box office, falling short of projections. According to a report from Variety, though the WB tentpole's availability to stream on HBO Max likely impacted its box office performance, "In the Heights" faced a number of significant hurdles.
- All 2021 WB films will open theatrically and debut on HBO Max on the same day, including upcoming releases "Space Jam: A New Legacy," "The Matrix 4," and "Dune."
- Several other WB films -- including "Godzilla vs. Kong" and "Mortal Kombat" -- have nonetheless performed solidly at the box office so far this year.
- "In the Heights" cost about $55 million to produce; WB must also pay out a portion of the film's earnings to the show's creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the film's director, Jon M. Chu.
