According to a worldwide threat assessment released on Tuesday, top US intelligence officials believe that Russia will attempt to interfere in the upcoming midterm elections. The threat apparently involves both direct hacking and manipulation of the electorate on social media. The statement describes the Russian government's alleged goals, which involve creating "wedges that reduce trust and confidence in democratic processes, degrade democratization efforts, weaken U.S. partnerships with European allies, undermine Western sanctions, encourage anti-U.S. political views, and counter efforts to bring Ukraine and other former Soviet states into European institutions." A number of top intelligence officials testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee about the report on Tuesday, including Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats. CIA Director Mike Pompeo, FBI Director Christopher Wray and National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers. Coats claimed that Russia views past attempts to interfere in US elections as successful, and will want to replicate the effort. – NBCNEWS
