Today's VC Industry Trends looks into venture funding for US-based foodtech startups:
Given today's $100M round for indoor farming startup BrightFarms, the other massive foodtech rounds in recent weeks, and my recent feature detailing the increased attention the sector has been receiving, it's definitely time to dive into foodtech.
The total round count peaked in Q2'18 at 122 rounds, while the top aggregate average funding round arrived just under a year later at almost $39M. While that latter figure was an aberration and the average round fell back down shortly thereafter, the figures indicate that larger rounds, in general, have been getting more play in recent years. Meanwhile, the round count has returned to the lows of late 2016.
Venture rounds of undeclared series became less prevalent beginning in 2019, a change that corresponds well with an increase in funding derived from series C+ rounds. Though sporadic...
