Some of Europe's VR pioneers have joined together to form Atlas V, a studio for immersive content. The Atlas V founders are Antoine Cayrol and Pierre Zandrowicz from Okio Studio, Arnaud Colinart from Agat Films, and Fred Volhuer from Shuttershades.io. The new studio has two VR experiences that will be showcased at Sundance's New Frontier. The two immersive films are Nico Casavecchia and Martin Allais’s Battlescar and Eliza McNitt’s Spheres. Atlas V executives say they also want to create live VR installations for festivals and that North America is one of its key markets. — VARIETY

Qualcomm introduced its new Snapdragon 845 chip. The chip is an improvement on its predecessor, the Snapdragon 835, with 25 percent more performance and 30 percent less power use. Snapdragon 845 also supports more powerful phone cameras and video recording, and it can deliver 2,400 x 2,400 resolution virtual reality at 120 frames per second. The chip can also run AI algorithms on the chipset rather than using a cloud-based service. — TECHCRUNCH

Canadian PhD student Robin Mazumder is using VR to explore his theory about the effect of skyscrapers on urban centers. Mazumder believes that skyscrapers can create higher stress levels. He measures galvanic skin response and blood pressure as he immerses his subjects in an urban cityscape using a VR headset. Other studies have shown that exposure to cities and urban environments creates a higher risk of mental illness, and that exposure to parks/green spaces can have physical benefits. — MOTHERBOARD

The classic horror film "Night of the Living Dead" is being remade in VR. The 50th anniversary of the film's theatrical release is being celebrated next year and the VR version will be released at the same time. Los Angeles-based VR company Supersphere made a deal with late director George Romero’s company Image Ten to produce the VR experience. Romero passed away in July and his "Night of the Living Dead" film is considered the genre-defining, seminal zombie movie. — VARIETY

Wolves in the Walls VR will premiere at next year's Sundance Film Festival. The VR experience is an adaptation of the children's book by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean. Users can play a character that interacts with the main character Lucy, who believes that wolves live in the walls of her home. The experience was originally being created by the Oculus Story Studio, which has since closed, and it was thought the project was canceled. Wolves in the Walls is being produced independently, but it is backed by Oculus Studios, which premiered Lost and Dear Angelica at Sundance in 2015 and 2017. Oculus Studios is also backing four other projects that will screen at Sundance this year. — VERGE

Apple is expected to release new AR glasses in 2019 or 2020, but market watchers believe the hardware could launch sooner. The longtime Apple chassis maker Catcher told Digitimes that the company was working on a chassis for a brand new product line, presumably for its largest client Apple. Another important Apple supplier, Qantas Computer, has licensed technology from Israel-based AR lens developer Lumus. Apple’s future AR glasses already have an internal codename, T288, and a unique operating system, rOS. — BGR
