Inside VR & AR (Mar 9th, 2018)

Terra Virtua, a new, subscription-based platform for VR and AR content, is due to launch in September. The platform was created by game industry veterans including co-founders Gary Bracey and Peter Bergstrom and is being billed as "Netflix for VR." Terra Virtua will be holding an ICO (initial coin offering) prior to launch for its Terra Virtua Tokens (TVT) cryptocurrency, which can be used to purchase in-game items and more. The company is also creating an incubator for developers, a mixed reality app to connect users with the platform, and a virtual assistant to help users browse content. Pre-sales for the TVT token begin March 26. — GAMES INDUSTRY BIZ

Augmented Audio - the sound of AR at SXSW 2018

To all AR/MR sound designers, developers, and creatives who wish to experiment and push the boundaries of augmented audio: Sennheiser is creating tools for you.

A live demo application and tutorials will be premiered at SXSW, with sessions running everyday March 10th through 14th at the Sennheiser AMBEO booth #908, as part of the AR/VR SXSW Track.

The Tribeca Film Festival has announced it will showcase more than 30 pieces in its immersive section. Tribeca was an early adopter of various platforms and launched its interactive Storyscape juried exhibit in 2013. This year's Storyscape features five projects, and the festival's Virtual Arcade will host 21 VR and AR world premieres. Additionally the festival is launching Tribeca Cinema360, a VR theater with four curated programs. Tribeca's immersive section runs April 20-28, and the full festival runs April 18-29. — VARIETY

VRgineers and Leap Motion are partnering to create a new enterprise-grade VR headset with integrated hand tracking. VRgineers is a VR firm that develops headsets for enterprise applications like engineering and design, and Leap Motion has hand-tracking technology that uses sensors in a headset to recognize and translate hand gestures. The companies intend to bring the new headset to market later this year. — VRFOCUS

The International Committee of the Red Cross has released a free AR app called Enter the Room that enables users to see the impact of war on children. The Red Cross developed the app with the digital agency Nedd. Enter the Room uses augmented reality and 3D audio to immerse the user in four different stages of a child's life, represented by the objects in their room, as they are affected by war. The experience lasts a few minutes which span four years in the child's life, and then the user is directed to the Red Cross website to learn more about children living in conflict zones and how they can help. — NEXT REALITY

Häagen-Dazs ice cream and HTC Vive funded a VR experience called The Extraordinary Honeybee. Directed by Jason Zada, who directed the 2016 horror film The Forest and created the popular holiday Elf Yourself app, The Extraordinary Honeybee was one of the VR for Impact projects that received funding last year. VR for Impact was started with $10 million by HTC Vive to help fund VR initiatives for social good. Häagen-Dazs marketed and produced the VR film, which is meant to raise awareness about Bee Colony Collapse and how crucial pollination is to the food we eat. The experience is available on HTC's Viveport app store and will be publicly released this summer. — VRSCOUT

Luxury retailer Barneys New York has created an 11-minute VR experience Mantle. Mantle was filmed with 360-degree camera technology and the project was a collaboration with Samsung and the Martha Graham Dance Company. The film features four principal dancers representing character archetypes and the performance focuses on the viewer. — ADWEEK
