The speaker and headphone company Bose is developing an AR platform and glasses based on audio. The Massachusetts-based company made the announcement at SXSW and showcased the prototype glasses, which have directional speakers built in to the stems that allow the wearer to hear audio privately without headphones or ear buds. The glasses have no camera but they have sensors for head tracking and location tracking. Bose also set up a $50 million venture fund to help other companies develop apps and related technology for the platform. Bose plans to release its AR SDK and a limited number of glasses this summer. — MASHABLE

Uber filed two patent applications in 2016 for VR inside its vehicles that were published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) last month. The patents are nearly identical and reveal a system that would use the car's sensor data to to generate a unique virtual environment for the rider. The system would also use the data to reduce motion sickness and could create digital representations of other passengers in the vehicle. The technology is not yet in use, but some Uber cars in Romania have already made Samsung GearVR headsets available to passengers, and in India Uber has partnered with OnePlus to give away free Loop VR headsets. — VRFOCUS
