The grant came from the Institute for Information & Communications technology Promotion (IITA), an R&D strategy and planning agency in South Korea. The California-based mixed reality company developed a new algorithm that enables holoportation (the transmission of 3D models of people to any location) using a single depth sensor and one PC. DoubleMe is collaborating with The University of Surrey 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) to roll out the system on the 5G network by the end of 2019. — VRFOCUS

The Canadian company eSight has developed AR glasses for legally blind and vision-impaired users. The company showed the technology at the recent Augmented World Expo (AWE) in Santa Clara, California. The glasses are custom-made to a user's prescription and use a front-facing camera to capture the view from a normal field of vision. The lenses are overlaid with transparent, adjustable OLED displays, and eSight uses algorithms to optimize footage of the world for specific tasks and zoom in or calibrate depth and focus. — ZDNET

The Steam store has reversed its policy and will now carry video games containing porn and other controversial content. Valve, the owner of Steam, was criticized recently for allowing a school shooting simulation game called Active Shooter on the platform. Parents of school shooting victims started an online petition that garnered more than 2,000 signatures asking the company to remove the game. Valve pulled the game, but this week the company announced that it will now be allowing all content unless it is illegal or "straight up trolling." Allowing VR porn makes Valve the first major platform to host adult content in virtual reality. — INDEPENDENT
