Inside VR & AR (Oct 10th, 2018)

1. The Magic Leap One AR headset is a “somewhat janky piece of magic,” according to TechCrunch. Content partnerships are coming out ahead of today’s “L.E.A.P” Conference, including new AR experiences from Weta Workshop, Peter Jackson’s Wingnut AR, Brainlab and Wayfair. As TechCrunch writes, Weta’s “Dr. Grordbort’s Invaders” provides the clearest vision of what entertainment on the $2,295 device can be. On the business content side of things, Brainlab’s tools let physicians, observers and spectators explore brain scans in three dimensions. We’ll have more updates from Leap Con tomorrow. -- TECHCRUNCH

2. VR and AR are finding purchase in the military space, with the VR/AR defense market expected to reach $1.79 billion by 2025, according to a new report. This is in part because advances first made in VR/AR gaming spaces--like “whole-earth rendering” and “preprogrammed AI behaviors,” in addition to hardware development--translate well to the defense industry. "Where today's high-end simulators rely on large and expensive display environments using domes and collimated displays, next generation training systems will benefit from emerging VR and AR technologies that enable solutions that are orders of magnitude less expensive, provide higher fidelity, and offer a smaller footprint supporting training at the point of need," said one VR company serving the defense market. -- ZDNET

3. In a trend unlikely to slow, aging IP “Borderlands” is being translated to VR, with added features, quality of life updates, and more. Gearbox announced the new VR title yesterday, adding that “Borderlands 2 VR” will launch on December 14 on PSVR. The company also detailed a “Matrix” bullet-time-like “BAMF Time” that will likely mitigate some of the high-speed challenges present in the original 2012 title. -- VRFOCUS

4. We may look back on 2018 as the year VR “stopped having potential and started being real,” according to VentureBeat. Partly an analysis of hype cycles, partly a recognition of the demonstrated use cases where the technology has taken hold, this year is “a real watershed moment for the industry in that we are putting forth products with an unprecedented degree of accessibility and usability, and this invariably means a much higher addressable market,” according to an analyst from VR/AR market intelligence firm Greenlight Insights. “This in turn is going to go a long way towards galvanizing a new generation of developers and content creators.” -- VENTUREBEAT

10. Appropriate for an AR keynote?

"This is someone reading a poem during the keynote of Magic Leap’s conference. Oh yeah, you’re only allowed inside the keynote if your badge lights up a certain colour.... others flew all that way for this view (not my photo)" - @DevRelCallum
