1. “Pokémon GO” developer Niantic Labs has announced the Beyond Reality Developer Contest, which will award $1 million in prize funding to proposals that use the company’s Niantic Real World Platform. The contest requires teams of five members or more “with experience in Unity and Java Server development,” according to Next Reality. Applications, including supporting material, game design briefs and more are due February 17 at 5 p.m. Pacific. — NEXT REALITY

2. AMD’s recent update that allowed SteamVR to stream content to standalone headsets won’t apply to Oculus headsets, though there are other services that can (reportedly) fill that gap.ROAD TO VR

“Due to the fact that the Radeon ReLive for VR software and the wireless streaming feature requires Steam VR, it does not comply with the requirements of the Oculus Store and therefore will not support Oculus devices.”

3. Switzerland-based AR heads-up display company WayRay has announced it will sponsor the Automotive Prize Category at the Reality Virtually Hackathon. According to VR Scout, the event is considered the largest immersive hackathon and runs from January 17-21. Though the first deadline for applications has passed, the final cut-off for the next two rounds of deadlines isn’t until December 29. — VRSCOUT

4. Haptics developer HapTech is looking to apply its electromagnetic recoil system to VR training in the military. The recoil system has previously been used as part of the company’s StrikerVR haptic guns (designed for high-end VR attractions). HapTech showed off its solution earlier this month at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference. — ROAD TO VR

Discovery’s VR mini-documentary series “TRVLR” provides some of the most fascinating views of the world, and likely represents the “closest” some (ie. me) will ever get to visiting all seven continents. And FWIW, that’s extremely valuable—to me, at least.
